On hand last night to greet Lauren Hutton at the Big beauty issue bash was Gemma Ward, who brought three of her girlfriends to the party. Just recently back form Paris, Gemma confessed that she is happily getting settled into life as a New Yorker. “I am settled in, and I’m thinking of going down to NYU to see if I can take any lectures in art or media.”

We asked Gemma what she thought of her turns as cover girl on The Daily and the Daily Extra. “The Daily is my favorite thing about Fashion Week. My friends and I collected the fans. Every morning during the shows, all of my friends and I have to have Starbucks and The Daily.” As for the Extra cover: “I loved that big poufy dress.” Gemma, we’re blushing.

(NEW YORK) Proving that Kate Moss shouldn’t be the only supermodel to get an issue of Vogue, Gemma Ward just wrapped her own issue of the Conde Nast title. Calvin Klein’s latest “obsession” edits the December issue of Vogue Australia—fitting, since she hails from the land down under. In the issue, Ward recounts, in detail, her experiences from the recent New York, Milan, and Paris shows for a fashion runway diary that was documented by photographer Malon Stolzman. “When models do diaries of their fashion week experiences, you never know if they are real,” said Maja Edmonston, Ward’s manager at IMG Models. “She really documented every day of fashion week, every night she went out, every fitting. She went through the process to really give an idea of yes, that it can be glamorous but exactly how much they work those six weeks.” [IMG Models, like The Daily, are both part of IMG]

From school in the suburbs to the top fashion catwalks, Valerie Lawson charts the rise of Aussie supermodel Gemma Ward.

Two years ago Gemma Ward dressed each day in a navy skirt with either a polo top or blue and white checked shirt, her secondary college uniform. Today, she wears chiffon, lace, tulle, silk, fur, diamonds, leather, velvet, crocodile skin and satin.

In New York, Paris and Milan, she sways down the runway in that weird pony walk of today’s models as she parades the clothes of Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, Versace, Balenciaga, Gucci and Marc Jacobs.

In double-page ads for Prada and Yves St Laurent, she gazes from the glossy pages of Vogue, Tatler and Harpers Bazaar, her mouth impossibly red and bee stung, her wide-set green eyes resembling a china doll’s.

What a week! The Calvin line-up in suspense right up until the morning of the shows. Emergency calls for fit models at 2 in the morning. More cancellations than it would be wise to repeat…But as the dust settles it was Gemma Ward who loomed large during the FW04 NY shows, swooping through virtually every major show in existence. This Aussie opened Zac, Vera Wang, and Narciso to make it clear that she is that second season girl who has clearly been groomed for stardom. That IMG just won’t stop, will it!
