Gemma Ward – A True Catwalk Queen

Source

CQ’s Kim Foster pays homage to the other famous Catwalk Queen called Gemma! Gracing this month’s UK Vogue cover is my favourite model Gemma Ward.

Whether or not it’s simply because she is an Aussie like me that I love her so much, I think most people can agree that this girl has something extraordinarily special about her. That “something special” has seen her go from the sunny beaches of Western Australia to the world’s major catwalks and fashion houses.

Scouted in 2002 when she appeared on the Australian television show ‘Search for a Supermodel’, few may be aware that she didn’t even make it through the early rounds! Yet, today she is arguably one of the world’s top models and one of Australia’s most famous exports.

Her features – often described as elfin – and her other-worldly look have helped her to score major advertising campaigns for Prada and Yves Saint Laurent to name but two. Among her many magazine covers, last year she also snared the cover of Time magazine – hardly a glossy fashion mag! Her unique look has also sparked a new wave of similar doll-like models such as Lily Cole, Heather Marks and Devon Aoki.

Now living in New York, the future looks even brighter for this 18 year-old with such a constant and massive international demand. One wonders how such a young person can handle it all? Nevertheless, the skies the limit for Gemma Ward and I think she’s fantastic.

Valentino Hearts Gemma

Source

(NEW YORK) He may have taken inspiration from Jean-Michel Basquiat for his recent fall runway show, but for Valentino’s fall campaign, it’s all about the “glamazon from down under” – aka Gemma Ward.

The Australian supermodel has been cast as the sole face of Valentino’s upcoming women’s campaign. In his nearly five-decade-long career, Valentino has worked with everyone from Mario Testino and Arthur Elgort to Patrick Demarchelier and Steven Meisel, but for fall, the designer tapped cutting-edge fashion duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot. This is the pair’s first campaign with the Italian luxury goods house, and the results will appear beginning in August books.

Versace unveiled its latest look yesterday, enlisting the eerie and ethereal beauty of 18-year-old Perth supermodel Gemma Ward.

While the fashion house may be best known for its brash sexiness, the new collection is about sleek lines, impeccable tailoring and slinky siren dresses.

And who better than the wide-eyed wonder woman to put the message into motion?

Gemma too pricey

Source

SHE remains a proud Australian, but today Gemma Ward is far too much in demand – and expensive – to model for our nation’s designers.

Ward, the Perth-born model whose meteoric rise last year snared her the cover of Time magazine, did not appear at the Sass & Bide and Willow shows during New York Fashion Week.

Instead, she trod the catwalk there yesterday for established US designer Carolina Herrera.

It’s Gemma, Gemma, Gemma

Source

Spring makeup always comes in light and fruity colors, to match lightweight, skin-baring spring clothing. But this year one pastel dominates all the rest. There is little peach or lilac, even less light green or blue. Eye shadows, lipsticks, glosses and blushes are almost all variations of pink.

Makeup artists say the trend can be traced to one striking young woman: a teenage fashion model named Gemma Ward. Her pink complexion and naturally rosy lips inspired makeup artists at more than two dozen spring fashion shows — held last fall in New York, Milan and Paris — to turn their models into porcelain dolls. “It’s Gemma, Gemma, Gemma,” said Romero Jennings, a senior makeup artist at MAC Cosmetics. “Without any makeup on she has the look that everybody wants, and that influences makeup artists and designers.”

Ms. Ward’s budding-ingenue look is a natural antidote to the bronzed and glossy style of last spring. And it is a match for the floral dresses and chiffon blouses that women are expected to wear this spring.

Gemma Ward: DJ

Events in 2005 > V Magazine and The Misshapes Launch Party

When a DJ plays two songs by the same band, it’s the musical equivalent of wearing head-to-toe Chanel. In other words, overkill. But style rules change when you’re a supermodel, and playlists get more leeway too. When Gemma Ward hit the MisShapes decks on Saturday at Luke and Leroy’s as a special guest deejay, celebrating the winter issue of V, she started with a slew of Killers songs back-to-back. But the packed crowd paused, shrugged, and got back to dancing.

There was Caroline Winberg, dancing with her friends to “Dancing With Myself.” There was Benjamin Cho, who also spun, drinking vodka in the back room while Julia Restoin-Roitfeld looked on, and Leigh Lezark chatted with Michael Stipe. And there was Cecilia Dean, who shimmied alongside Stephen Gan and James Kaliardos in her silver Martin Margiela vest. “This place is so cute!” she shouted. Even Zaldy, whose see-and-be-seen status has skyrocketed, thanks in part to Gwen Stefani’s recent L.A.M.B. fashion show and the avalanche of press it garnered, was there. “Don’t look so surprised to see me!” he winked. “My heart is here!” His ardent fans will remember that he trekked from Karl Lagerfeld’s Halloween party to Luke and Leroy’s in a bejeweled black bodysuit and stayed until dawn.

Gemma Ward Loves The Daily

Source

On hand last night to greet Lauren Hutton at the Big beauty issue bash was Gemma Ward, who brought three of her girlfriends to the party. Just recently back form Paris, Gemma confessed that she is happily getting settled into life as a New Yorker. “I am settled in, and I’m thinking of going down to NYU to see if I can take any lectures in art or media.”

We asked Gemma what she thought of her turns as cover girl on The Daily and the Daily Extra. “The Daily is my favorite thing about Fashion Week. My friends and I collected the fans. Every morning during the shows, all of my friends and I have to have Starbucks and The Daily.” As for the Extra cover: “I loved that big poufy dress.” Gemma, we’re blushing.
