Gemma Ward turned 22.  Ward, who according to her sister Sophie dressed up as a “crazed Elvis fan” for Halloween over the weekend, appeared with a couple of friends in New York’s East Village today after an extended spell under the radar.

None other than Gemma Ward ! She’s a total sweetheart!

I was standing outside of Penn Station finishing up a Nat Sherman when I glanced to my right and saw her standing there with her brother Henry & friends. I was unsure if it was her at first because it was just so…unexpected! We chatted for a bit (no juicy goss to report) then they hopped in a cab and I headed home. She also complemented me on my eyes haha!

PERTH-BORN Gemma Ward, the thin model who captivated the world fashion scene, has put on weight as she struggles with the loss of friend Heath Ledger.

Ward, seen last week on a Byron Bay beach, is due back on the runway in February and is believed to be madly exercising.

It is understood her weight gains have been exacerbated by the shocking death of the actor, rumoured to have been her lover, a year ago.

We haven’t seen much of Gemma Ward lately — except for the unexpected cover in October — and according to this week’s Australian Grazia, she spends most of her time with her mother, “refusing invitations to parties and other events” at her New York base, but she made a surprise appearance on Tuesday night, celebrating in the streets of New York with a picture of Barack Obama.  That’s not the only reason Gemma should be celebrating — her movie The Black Balloon recently picked up eleven nominations at Australia’s most prestigious film awards, and it’s set to make a New York debut on Dec. 5.

When a DJ plays two songs by the same band, it’s the musical equivalent of wearing head-to-toe Chanel. In other words, overkill. But style rules change when you’re a supermodel, and playlists get more leeway too. When Gemma Ward hit the MisShapes decks on Saturday at Luke and Leroy’s as a special guest deejay, celebrating the winter issue of V, she started with a slew of Killers songs back-to-back. But the packed crowd paused, shrugged, and got back to dancing.

There was Caroline Winberg, dancing with her friends to “Dancing With Myself.” There was Benjamin Cho, who also spun, drinking vodka in the back room while Julia Restoin-Roitfeld looked on, and Leigh Lezark chatted with Michael Stipe. And there was Cecilia Dean, who shimmied alongside Stephen Gan and James Kaliardos in her silver Martin Margiela vest. “This place is so cute!” she shouted. Even Zaldy, whose see-and-be-seen status has skyrocketed, thanks in part to Gwen Stefani’s recent L.A.M.B. fashion show and the avalanche of press it garnered, was there. “Don’t look so surprised to see me!” he winked. “My heart is here!” His ardent fans will remember that he trekked from Karl Lagerfeld’s Halloween party to Luke and Leroy’s in a bejeweled black bodysuit and stayed until dawn.
